Visit to Roatan, Honduras, spring 2021
In March, 2021, after being in lockdown for a year, I decided it was time for a change of scenery. My criteria was a place that required COVID testing, had good scuba diving, and was budget-friendly. I ended up in Roatan, an island off the coast of Honduras. I spent a month and a half there. I fell in love with the place!
I wanted to make a contribution to help the coral reef, so I took the Coral Restoration class, so I could volunteer during my time there. The first group of photos shows the coral nursery, where they hang coral about 15' under the surface, wait for them to grow, and then transplant large pieces in the out-planting site, using special epoxy to "glue" it to the reef. Volunteers help to clean the trees and the filaments, and with the out-planting, and measuring the pieces that have been replanted. it's fun, but also hard work! I can relate to how the astronauts must feel in space. Underwater is similar...you need to stay stable while floating in the water.

Diving was the main attraction on Roatan. Calm and clear waters, lots of coral, fish, moray and spotted eels, lobster, octopus, turtles, crab, squid, and tons of tiny things. Just a 5-10 minute boat ride, and your there!

I met Dian on FB before I arrived. She took me around the island to show me all the sights...thanks Dian!! If you're ever on Roatan, visit her cool shop, Umbul Umbul. Furniture, accessories, clothing and more!
Also, there's a lot of yoga happening on Roatan. There was a daily class every morning at 9am, right across from my hotel! I went on most days, it was HARD!
Tahiti, 2015
I've been scuba diving for over 20 years, and have been to quite a few places! To start with, here's a video from my latest trip to Tahiti with my friend Dave, in 2015. We had crazy weather, rough seas, and saw LOTS OF SHARKS! More pics and videos to come.
