Hey Lori, here are my comments. Personally I prefer the layout of the first option with the bigger island. I guess I don't think it's a big deal that you can't directly face the great room while working at the sink. Why is that a detriment? I figure the time you'll be at the island you'd more likely be talking with your guests sitting around the island or at the table, vs. those in the great room. I think the increased space and seating are a better option.

Another option might be to increase the length of the island for option 2 so it extends closer to the great room. Then you get the direction and size you want.
That said, there isn't that much difference between the two designs. I like the flow of the kitchen and especially like the view of the golf course, haha. Good luck!
